Copenhagen, Dec 17- Flaming barricades were erected and rocks and molotov cocktails thrown to preventing riot police from advancing into the autonomous Christiana neighborhood in Copenhagen on Monday night.

After a long day of demonstrations against the Canadian Tar Sands and capitalism as the cause of climate change, an evening party was held in Christiana, which has been a squatted and autonomous neighborhood in Copenhagen for about forty years. Riot police cut off all exits to the neighborhood, deployed tear gas, and made about 200 arrests once inside. The arrests bring the total number related to the week’s protests to about 1,500.

Copenhagen, Dec 14- Violence is expected to escalate on the streets of Copenhagen over coming days as climate activists, angered by the “pre-emptive” arrest of almost 1,200 protesters over the weekend, consider more radical forms of protest. Under new powers, Danish police have the power to detain anyone they suspect might break the law in the near future for up to 12 hours.

Crikey today witnessed an entire 230-person strong climate change demonstration placed under arrest, although there was no sign of violent behaviour by the protesters. According to the Danish police, the protest had not been authorised; however, until the arrests, police officers had facilitated the progress of the march and told activists they would be allowed to continue.

Journalists and even a jogger are believed to be among those now being housed in the special steel cages brought in for COP15.

Police Make Indiscriminate Mass Arrests

At around 3.15pm the police charged into the march near to where the CJA System Change not Climate Change group had joined the march, as well as people from the NTAC called demonstration who had been sent there earlier by the police from their gathering place in central Copenhagen. The police cut off about a thousand people including many who were marching as part of Libertarian Socialist bloc. By 5pm several hundred had been handcuffed and made to sit on the floor, where they remained in the cold for hours. [Pics 1 | 2 | 3 | 4] [reports 1 | 2| personal account] [video: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6] [audio] The police’s press office reported that those arrested are between 700-900 people, later revised to close to one thousand. See CJA Press Release, of these only three were eventually charged with anything.

Following the enormous mass arrests of climate protestors, accounts are emerging of the poor conditions within the specially set up detention facilities, with people handcuffed for up to eight hours following their lengthy detention upon the streets. Despite this obvious repression climate campaigners remain determined to push the message that we need System Change not climate change.

AMY GOODMAN: Do you think it’s catastrophic that there’s no deal?
PRESIDENT EVO MORALES: [translated] No, it’s a waste of time. And if the leaders of countries cannot arrive in an agreement, why don’t the peoples then decide together?

Greenville, SC- On Nov. 30, two protestors locked themselves to the 1.5 million pound generator destined for Duke Energy’s Cliffside coal plant in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Protestors vowed to prevent the generator, which had been traveling across South Carolina on a 300 foot trailer, from reaching the coal plant. “Our nation has no choice, we must stop burning coal. The only choice that we can make is whether we do that in time to still have breathable air, drinkable water, a livable climate, and standing mountains,” said, Catherine Anne. Protestors also draped a large banner from the top of the generator reading, “Stop Cliffside”.
